Depending on your situation, nametags can be a real drag or a useful lead generation tool. While some real estate agents are on the fence about wearing nametags, others see it as a great means of attracting additional customers. Thankfully, there are nametag options for real estate agents.
We don’t know if Terence J. McCarthy, owner of TJM Properties, wears a nametag. But, we know that people know his name. During the late 80s McCarthy was the overseer of more than 100 renovations, acquisitions, and home sales a year. His firm bought its first hotel in 1984 and that changed everything. So, while he doesn’t necessarily need to wear a nametag, it might have helped in the beginning of his lucrative career.

Of course, there are plenty of people who believe this methodology is obsolete or reinforces the perception of salespeople being pushy. But, once they see that they are getting business from wearing them, their stories quickly change.
People often think that those with nametags on are more approachable. It can be unnerving to talk to a complete stranger. But, if there’s a name attached to the face things get a whole lot easier. That’s the beauty of nametags for lead generation. But, here are some other helpful hints for using your nametags:
- Wear it upside down. While that might seem a bit hokey, it’s sure to help start conversations. People will readily inform you of its misplacement and then the door to potential customer relations is opened.
- Wear it in a retail store. People expect to see nametags in retail stores. Customers will mistake you for a store employee. But, once that door to conversation is opened, why not step right on through?
- Switch them up. Having nametags that play specifically to certain scenes and events can be particularly beneficial. You can have bling/swag ones for your networking events, and then some with different quotes for various settings, like grocery shopping. If you need some ideas, click this.

Obviously, there are times and places in which wearing your nametag will prove more beneficial than others. And, everybody’s got his/her own preference as to which times and places are most appropriate. As a real estate agent, you will simply have to determine what works best for you and where it does that.
In truth, nametag wearing is a pretty “old school” methodology. Plus, it has the ability to make you seem more retail than professional. Those who stick to this belief point out that doctors and attorneys don’t go places wearing nametags.
On the flipside, maybe that’s simply because they are too snotty to be willing to look “retail.” But, since it’s all in the name of business that decision rests solely on your shoulders. Do you want the added chance for conversation or not?
